I've had some success by using lead (solder) on original panels on my
Carryalls, as long as you dont eat the stuff or breath the fumes,
particularly when grinding / sanding. Takes some time to get good at the
application and finishing, but it beats fillers of all types hands down.
On the aluminium shell of the Sno-Cat I used Chemical Metal (high strength
filler impregnated with metal dust) to tidy up the welded areas - tried to
get the aluminium equivalent but couldn't source it locally. The original
use of this stuff was to fill holes in castings I believe.
Both processes left me needing a very small amount of ordinary filler just
for finishing purposes, but the less the better. As an aside I find it
very helpful to get steel bodies blasted before working on them, the
blasting gets rid of all the rubbish and exposes the " iffy " areas. I
saved money by doing all the work except the actual blasting myself
(dismantling, delivery, collection, priming, reassembly) and this reduced
the total bill dramatically. Gordon
