Congratulations, JCW,
My first mv was the Dodge M37 and while I was a fair mechanic, I knew nothing
about really old vehicles beyond the simple basics. Unfortunately, I did not
bother to get a set of manuals for this thing, or get a lot of heads-up
information before hand, and the truck didn't live as long as it could have if
I had. Get a subscription to MV magazine(email them at MVehicle@aol.com), get
the back issues on waking up old MVs and on the M38s, order some manuals from
Portrayal Press, and do it right the first time, or you might end up learning
that expensive lesson like the one I learned about sticking oil pressure
release valves and clogged oil pickup screens.........
Of course I did get all that experience rebuilding flathead sixes right after
that.......
You need to change fluids and filters, check the gas tank for cleanliness,
verify the functioning of the oil pressure system and the general cleanliness
of the pan and engine, and a bunch of other little things first. It's more
fun to gas it up, jump in and go on a rat patrol mission, but in the long run,
doing the "receiving inspection" first may save you a ton of money and
frustration later. Personally, I think the M38 is a GREAT jeep to own, and
I'm looking for one myself.

eens.......
Of course I did get all that
