Dave,
I have steel cable with a rope core on my Jeep's winch. My understanding is that the rope core holds lubricant to protect the cable from rust. (Alan Bowes will please correct me if I am wrong about this). Once or twice a year I unreel all the cable and squirt WD40 on each layer as I rewind. Seems to work for me.
