I saw a show about a British driving school that teaches aid workers who
drive 4x4s in wonderful places like off road Bosnia and Ruwanda, how to
drive in the worst conditions (like up a 60deg muddy slope!). Real
interesting show to say the least. First thing the guy said, and
stressed it MANY TIMES, is to keep your thumbs from hooking around the
steering wheel. Grip with finger tips and palm, not thumb. The terrible
exprience posted here shows EXACTLY why this teacher constantly stressed
this point.

Ever since then I have done just that while off roading!
