I now have the opportunity to add an M38 to the collection and need a fair
value reality check. It is a 52 that is the classic "jeep in a barn" story.
>From the military it went to a local civil defense group and then went to
this owner in the late 50's. They used it for hunting. It has never had a
plow. The odo shows 60k miles and it looks like the engine had a rebuild
because it is painted red (how can I tell if its the original block?). The
body is pristine, no rust or dents and has all accessories kike handles,
lights etc. It is still 24v and has the distributor and generator. Pintle
hook is there and the wood is still in the front bumper (which isnt even
bent). It has the air cleaner, seats, switches, knobs etc. It has not been
run in 15+ years so the brakes and fuel system is shot but the engine is
free. It honestly ran (properly) when parked and was parked because of
owners illness. The fenders and hood are not dented. It deserves a frame up
refinishing and I consider it an "easy" resto because most bolts seem to turn
and it has never been bashed.
The problem is that I am used to buying $500 jeeps and this one is over
$2000. I consider it worth the price considering hoow much time I spent on
the GPW chasing and paying for parts as well as fixing the damage from
accidents, plows and general civilian "improvements". To this day I say my
GPW will never be right (but I love it anyway). Is 2k too much?? reality
check please...
So give me a reality check. Is am M38 worth it? Are there any M38
enthusiasts out there? I rarely see them in Supply Line for sale.
Questions, and comments appreciated especially from M38 owners.
