Hiya Everett, I don't doubt that the stars were missing on some of the
vehicles you purchased. But the National Symbol is still a requirement for US
Army vehicles. To quote further from the TM (same paragraph as
before)......... "The star will be applied to front and rear of vehicles as
specified in Appendix C" (of this TM).
Appendix C contains drawings of just about every vehicle in current (and
recent) inventory.
A further paragraph goes on to say about the National Symbol (page 39,
Para33(b)........ ".....Placement should be centered on the equipment, on
line with unit ID markings".
I'll speculate here !!!!
When the camouflage system was introduced way back in August 1975 (with TC
5-200, 28th.August 1975), it was no longer a requirement to have the legend
"US Army" and the "Registration Number" painted on the sides of the hood.
Inattentive readers of this TC, and the TM which followed it (TB43-0209,
29th.October 1976), probably thought that this also applied to the National
Symbol. It doesn't ! To make matters worse, even some Inspectors failed to
interpret/understand the instructions clearly (boy, I would have gigged 'em
!!!) and so we end up with trucks etc being incompletely marked, and no-one,
from brush-hand to Inspector, knowing any different.
That is probably the reason why they reached DRMO-stage (that and a few dozen
other ignored instructions) without having the National Symbol correctly
displayed.
I hope this helps............
Kind regards.....
Ken
