[MV] winches, pulleys, leverage???????

Hi all,
in reference to an earlier thread, I ended up a little confused. Is there
mechanical advantage gained by running the winch cable from my M35 out to a
tree, through a pulley, and back to the truck? Or, do I need to go: winch,
to pulley on tree, back to pulley on truck, and back to tree, to gain
mechanical advantage?
Sorry for the confusion, I want to outfit my truck with the necessary
equipment, and if that means 2 pulleys, then that's what I want to do.
