It was gear drive all the way with no lockout hubs for
the least needed axle, that being the front one.
There was no differential action at the transfer case
as there is on modern ones. The front and back axles
could bind the gears in the transfer case if the truck
was used on hard packed roads or tight turns.
It wasn't essential to keep the front drive engaged
and this feature was considered too expensive. So it
was up to the operator to determine when it was needed
and to shift it in or out. This CAN be done while the
truck is moving IF the operator knows how.
Also, consider that ten years before there were NO
front wheel drive trucks ANYWHERE, this was a high
tech advance! So any front wheel drive mechanism was
a big improvement.
If you haven't used this type of drive you may find
it hard to engage but there tricks to learn that make
it work well. You just have to understand how it
works.
The two levers are probably: 1.) to engage the front
drive. And 2.) to shift the transfer case between
high range and low range. But I suspect there is a
Power Take Off on the transmission for the dump box,
winch, or both, so I'd expect more levers either under
the seat or beside it.
Not sure what the item on the main shifter is, but my
guess is that its a reverse lockout to keep the
operator from accidentally trying to put the
transmission in reverse.
Let us know how you make out,
Joe F.
