Hi David,
Correct. The V-17 was a pole-setting truck which had a large, PTO-driven
(IIRC) auger mounted on the bed. The auger would fold down to reduce the
overhead clearance in transit and, in the upright position, was also
used to place the pole in the hole it had drilled. I don't remember for
sure what the V-18 was, but I *think* it was the cable truck. The Air
Force, as well as the SigC, used the vehicles; the AF had them well into
the '70s.
That's 37 years as an Air Force civilian communications-electronics type
speaking. Of course, I've been retired for over 11 years, so maybe I'm
going senile and/or hallucinating. :)
