Thanks to all who responded to the question about the fording valve. It
turns out that the old valve was leaking around the threads on the manifold
and was "tuned" with this problem present. When I replaced the valve,
things were worse. I reset the air and fuel and the problem went away. I
may be wrong about this, but it runs great now, so I'm sticking to this
explanation.
