Is that last 3/4 inch required to keep the bearing in place with the
outside nut? If not, I'd be tempted to cut the end of the tube off with a
portable bandsaw, file the edge to allow the nut to go back on and continue
with life.
If you require that last 3/4 to hold the nut, the only thing I could
suggest would be some very careful filing with a triangle file with fine
teeth. I've restored threads that way, but it is far from ideal. One more
thing, there are die stocks that are adjustable. If you can find the
proper pitch cutters and you could put the die over the tube, tighten the
die stock and back the die off the tube, you might be able to save the
threads. I wouldn't be surprised if you have to do some tool modification
to make that work.
