The USA had a similar disaster several years ago when a hurricane washed
Galveston, Texas away, deaths were in the thousands, so many that the bodies
were piled on beach and burned - did not work- tide came in and scattered
the scorched bodies down the coast.
There was not much aid to the survivors from anyone outside US.
