[MV] WC Dodge Grilles

I was always told that early WC Dodge grilles had the rods going
through holes in the grille frame, and that later grilles had the bars
welded to the front of the frame, thereby cutting down greatly on the
drilling and assembly work, which makes sense to me. Both my Command
Car and my Carryall are '42 and should have early grilles and
symmetrical headlight guards (without the blackout lights on the
drivers side.)

So far so good, but the problem arises when I get to the headlight
guards. Both of my trucks have the bars tacked to the front of the
guard, which I assumed had to be right, then I find guards, including
the big guard to include the blackout headlight which has to be later,
with the guards drilled and the rods through the centre, apparently
exactly the reverse of what happened to the main grille. Anyone know
enough about '42 WC Dodge grilles and headlight guards to enlighten me?
