The Banjo axles on some of the CCKW's and all of the Chevrolets made in WW2
were of a conventional design similar to todays vehicle. The major difference
is that the chuck/carrier with all the gears in it came out the front and there
was a rear cover that could be removed to just look inside. The rear cover had
a tic-tac-toe design to it for reinforcement for the front axle as that was
most likely to hit a rock etc.

The split type is an earlier design. If you an imagine the large end of two
funnels coming together where the drive shaft enters, that is what a split
looks like. The housing also comes apart like that. On the front axle, the seal
to keep the GO out of the knuckles it the 1st part(s) to be put into the
housing when it is split

The splits were made by Timken and the Banjo'by GM.

The Banjo's are much better. All DUKWs are built with them. You could not build
one with splits due to the inferior knuckle sealing
